Spend time in thanksgiving, praise, and worship

12 Keys to effective prayer for believers in Jesus Christ

#3 Spend time in thanks, praise, & worship before & after a request.

I know a lady who has many grandchildren, but only regularly sends birthday cards and presents to three of them. Do you know why? Those three grandchildren always thank her for her gifts and for remembering their birthdays. The others don't.

Our relationship with God should be a personal and loving one on both ends. Obviously, God loves us dearly. (John 3:16) It is only right that we respond in kind.

Praising God, worshipping Him, and thanking Him for what He has done, is doing, and will do for us is not only appropriate and a blessing to God, but it also helps us. When we spend the time to dwell on God, our faith rises up, our problems seem much smaller compared to Almighty God, and joy springs up out of our spirits.

I really think that it does more good for us than for God, but it is also a blessing to God, and it is nice to be able to return something of value to Him. God has done so very much for us already that if we think about it much at all, it isn't hard to find lots to thank Him for.

On top of that, it is entirely appropriate to thank God for answers to prayers that you know by faith God has given you, even though you may not see them, yet. Joshua and his army were instructed to give their victory shout before the walls of Jericho came down.

Psalm 100
A Psalm of thanksgiving.

Shout for joy to Yahweh, all you lands!
    Serve Yahweh with gladness.
Come before his presence with singing.
Know that Yahweh, he is God.
It is he who has made us, and we are his.
We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
    Into his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, and bless his name.
For Yahweh is good.
    His loving kindness endures forever,
    His faithfulness to all generations.

Luke 11:12-19
12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

A Divided House Cannot Stand

14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons."

16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. 17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.

18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.

2 Corinthians 2:14
Triumphant in Christ
14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ's triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.

2 Corinthians 9:15

15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Ephesians 1:15-23

Prayer for Knowledge and Understanding

15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God's people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[1] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength

20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Ephesians 5:17-21
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,

20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Study and meditate on God's Word.

12 Keys to effective prayer for believers in Jesus Christ
#2 Constantly study & meditate on God's Word

God's will is revealed in God's Word. You can plainly read a great deal about God's plans, desires, and will in the Holy Bible. What you read can change your life for good. The Holy Bible isn't something that you should just read once in your life, but something that you need to read, re-read, meditate on, speak out, listen to, and study as long as you live.

The truths in the Bible become more clear as you read them again, and they work their way into your spirit, where they give life and hope, and where they build faith. When you stay in the Word of God, you will know what is God's will and what is not in most situations.

"If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you." -- John 15:7 (WEB)

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. -- Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

I will meditate on your precepts,
    And consider your ways.
I will delight myself in your statutes.
I will not forget your word. -- Psalm 119:15-16

To meditate on God's word, you think about it over and over, filling your mind and even your mouth with it.

But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted! -- John 15:7 (NLT)

-- Juan 15:7 (NLT)

Stay in the righteousness of Jesus Christ

12 Keys to effective prayer for believers in Jesus Christ
#1 Start from a position of righteousness before God.

Salvation that comes from trusting Christ-- which is the message we preach-- is already within easy reach. In fact, the Scriptures say, "The message is close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart."

For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, "Anyone who believes in him will not be disappointed. " -- Romans 10:8-11 (NLT)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. -- 1 John 1:9 (WEB)

Brothers, I don't regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. -- Philippians 3:13-14 (WEB)

You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience; among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them. -- Ephesians 2:1-10 (WEB)

Beloved, if our hearts don't condemn us, we have boldness toward God; and whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.

This is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he commanded. He who keeps his commandments remains in him, and he in him.

By this we know that he remains in us, by the Spirit which he gave us. -- 1 John 3:21-24 (WEB)

You husbands, in like manner, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers may not be hindered. -- 1 Peter 3:7 (WEB)

Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. -- 2 Timothy 2:22 (WEB)

-- 2 Timoteo 2:22 (WEB)

The Question about Fasting

Gospel Reading Mark 2:18-22
The Question about Fasting

18The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast. People came to [Jesus] and objected, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. 21No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. 22Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.”
Joy of the Feast in Place of Fasting

Some scholars opine that if we use socio-cultural insights in reading the Bible, the passage “And the Word became flesh” (Jn 1:14) should really read “And the Word became a Jew.” This shows that when the Son of God took on our human nature, he became a man of a particular culture which became his second nature. Jesus therefore thought, dressed, ate, prayed, and acted like a Jew. He spoke Aramaic, attended the synagogue service, took a trade, and followed the customs of his people. But in a real sense, Jesus was also a “marginal Jew.” On many religious/cultural issues, he countered his culture: he rejected Mosaic purity on food, opposed the current understanding of the Sabbath, welcomed women to his group, and consorted with the outcasts of society. He ate while others fasted. In today’s Gospel, some people object that his disciples do not fast, which is really a criticism of his ways and teaching on matter of fasting.

Jesus’ ministry somehow continued John the Baptist’s. They both called for repentance to welcome the reign of God. But Jesus proclaims God’s love for his people and their salvation in him. Fasting (Hebrew ta’anit) is an act of humiliation. People humble themselves before God to move God to action in their behalf. But the reign of God already comes with Jesus and in him; there is no need of self-humiliation to persuade God to act.

This conviction about God’s pure grace and unmerited love makes Jesus compare the reign of God to a wedding banquet. He is the bridegroom and his followers are the guests at the wedding feast. In the wedding there is joy and communion, satisfaction of body and spirit. It would be an insult (to God who prepared the banquet) or an indication that they did not approve of the wedding if they refused to attend the wedding (that is, if they fasted).

Gospel Reading Mark 2:23-28

Mark 2:23-28
The Disciples and the Sabbath

23As [Jesus] was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath, his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain. 24At this the Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” 25He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry? 26How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat, and shared it with his companions?” 27Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. 28That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”
Unlawful on the Sabbath

The Hebrew sabbat is connected with the root “SBT” which means to cease or to rest. Among ancient Mediterranean peoples, there was a day different from the rest of the days because it was special to the divinities. People ceased their normal activities on this “taboo” day. But in Israel, God’s rest after creation is the theological basis for man’s rest at the end of the week (Gn 2:1-3). Another reason is historical: the Sabbath is a day of rest for the Israelites, their animals and their slaves, because the Israelites, who themselves were once slaves in Egypt, should have compassion on those forced to labor (Dt 5:12-15).

To fence in and protect the sacredness of the Sabbath rest, the rabbis enumerated 39 types of work which were prohibited on this day, the third of which was reaping. Picking the heads of grain was considered reaping, and this violation is pointed out by the Pharisees to Jesus.

While prohibitions abounded, exceptions were also admitted, like the Temple duties (Mt 12:5), the unloosing of cattle (Lk 13:15), and other actions in which life was at stake. There were even rabbis who would agree with Jesus that “the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Here Jesus objects to the strict Pharisaic interpretation, the mere material observance of the Sabbath that admits no exception. He interprets the law in humanitarian terms, according to human needs, as God would have it. God established the seventh day as a period of joy and refreshment. Pope John Paul II interprets the sacredness of the Sabbath: “The divine rest of the seventh day does not allude to an inactive God, but emphasizes the fullness of what has been accomplished. It speaks, as it were, of God’s lingering before the ‘very good’ work (Gn 1:31) which his hand has wrought, in order to cast upon it a gaze full of joyous delight” (Dies Domini, n 11).

Mark 3:1-6
A Man with a Withered Hand

1[Jesus] entered the synagogue. There was a man there who had a withered hand. 2They watched him closely to see if he would cure him on the sabbath so that they might accuse him. 3He said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up here before us.” 4Then he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” But they remained silent. 5Looking around at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out and his hand was restored. 6The Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him to put him to death.
Grieved at their Hardness of Heart

The Pharisees watch Jesus closely, ready to accuse him if he cures on a Sabbath. Jesus, in turn, accuses them of “hardness of heart” (Greek porosis tes kardias). Hardness of heart implies rebellion against the Lord, an unwillingness to listen to and be led by him. Alluding to the desert incidents when the Israelites quarreled with God and put him to the test, the psalmist wishes for an obedient heart: “O, that today you would hear his voice; do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the desert” (Ps 95:7-8). Elsewhere, Jesus declares that Moses permitted divorce and the writing of a bill of divorce in Israel “because of the hardness of your hearts” (Mk 10:5), which alludes to the people’s incapacity to live up to the will of God regarding the union of man and woman.

Here the Pharisees harden their hearts and close their minds against Jesus. They see Jesus as totally undermining their interpretation of the Law, their piety, and their actions. For them, Jesus breaks the tradition and confronts the authority. They do not rejoice that a man is delivered from a state of distress because it is done on a Sabbath. Ironically, they, the guardians of the Sabbath, determine to do harm and to kill—to let the man with a withered hand continue to suffer and to put Jesus to death. They reject life and redemption. This is the bitter fruit of that hardness of heart which provokes in Jesus both anger and godly sorrow.

Marcos 3:1-6
Isang Lalaking May Lantang Kamay

Gospel Reading Mark 3:7-12

Gospel Reading Mark 3:7-12
The Mercy of Jesus

7Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people [followed] from Galilee and from Judea. 8Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. 9He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him. 10He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him. 11And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, “You are the Son of God.” 12He warned them sternly not to make him known.
Unclean Spirits.. Fall Down Before Him

In Sacred Scriptures, there is a close connection between the holy and the clean. Holiness is first applied to God as someone who is “wholly other,” and expresses the idea of separation, majesty, incomprehensibility. By analogy, a person or a thing is holy or “clean” since it is set apart for the service of the deity and is removed from common use. Later, the idea of cleanness/holiness is broadened to include ethical or moral purity.

Angels are spirits who act as messengers of God. Created as higher than human beings and closer to God, they are considered holy. But there are also “unclean spirits”; these are demons or spiritual powers which are opposed to God. While angels are “ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation” (Heb 2:14), the “unclean spirits” put people under their power, rendering them unclean, and causing them insanity and harm.

Here the unclean spirits address Jesus as the Son of God, not as a confession, but as an attempt to render him harmless. There was a popular belief that knowledge of the precise name or quality of a person confers mastery over him. The demons try to control Jesus and strip him of his power, but their cries of recognition are futile. Jesus is truly the Son of God, the Bearer of the Holy Spirit, and between the Holy Spirit and the unclean spirits there is a categorical antithesis that the demons must recognize. With Jesus’ divine authority, the unclean spirits are silenced. He is the “Stronger One” who ties the “strong man” (the devil) and despoils him.

(1Pedro 5:7)
